Yesterday a friend and I drove to Bentonsport, IA for a Plein Air Workshop for pastel and oil painters. That is a 2 1/2 hour drive and well worth it for a lesson with John Preston. Unfortunately there was rain and thunderstorms predicted for all day. But John used a reference photo of a local river site and demonstrated both in oil and pastel. We all then tried to replicate what he did. After I completed that exercise, I took the reference and went crazy with color trying to capture a different time of day. It’s incredible how gifted some instructors are! The best part of being an artist is there is always something to learn.
